Romantasy Books are on a Roll. Is TV Next?

Any time a book genre doubles in size within a year, everyone in the IP world is bound to pay attention. Is this the next big thing? Over the last two weeks, the WSJ and Bloomberg have covered the momentum in romantasy novels —a genre that blends equal parts romance and fantasy, written and read mostly by women— based on data from Circana BookScan.

In romantasy novels, as the WSJ puts it, “heroines ride dragons to battle enemies and otherwise navigate magical realms, all while living their best sex lives”. US romantasy book sales are expected to hit $610m this year, up from $454m in 2023.
